Intertek Hong Kong Hosts Inspiring Laboratory Visits for School Students

Collaborating with the Consumer Council and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education

September 06, 2023

Earlier last month, Intertek Hong Kong had the privilege of collaborating with the Consumer Council and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) to host an enlightening laboratory visit for 30-35 enthusiastic primary school students.

The Consumer Council is an independent statutory authority in Hong Kong, established in 1974 and formalised in April 1977 under the Consumer Council Ordinance. Its role is to enhance consumer welfare and empower consumers to protect themselves.

The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) is a non-governmental organisation established in 2007, dedicated to providing information, support and learning opportunities to gifted students aged 10 to 18.

The visit was part of our ongoing commitment to inspire the next generation of innovators, providing them with a first-hand look at real-world applications of science and technology. The students had the opportunity to explore three of our key laboratories: our Toys Laboratory, the UL 2272 Scooter facility, and the first-ever LED laboratory.

Our experts led the students through each lab, detailing the rigorous processes of testing and certifying the safety of toys at the Toys Lab, explaining the comprehensive testing procedures of electric scooters at the UL 2272 Scooter facility, and divulging our connections with the eminent inventor, Thomas Edison, at the Lighting Lab.

The excitement was palpable as the students engaged with the testing procedures, asked inquisitive questions, and were amazed with the complex processes that ensure the safety and reliability of everyday products.

Wong Chung Po, Associate Director of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE), Joey Lai, Head of Consumer Education at the Consumer Council, and Joean Yeung, Consumer Education Officer at the Consumer Council led the event. The delegation's presence added to the richness of the experience for the students.

Grace Li, Vice President, Human Resources, Greater China and Hong Kong Regional Management commented: "At Intertek, we take immense pride in contributing to the education of future innovators and look forward to hosting more visits. Our goal is to continue igniting curiosity and inspiring a lifelong love for learning. We hope that this experience will inspire young students' curiosity and prepare them for future academic pursuits."
