Sensationalized by celebrities and coveted by children and adults, self-balancing personal transporters were considered among the most highly desired, innovative products to hit the markets.
The use of self-balancing personal transport devices, including Electric Scooters, Hoverboards, Segway, Unicycles, Skates and Skateboards has become more prevalent in many countries in recent years.
Numerous safety issues with the devices have created uncertainty about their viability in the marketplace. Incidents of fire and explosion with these self-balancing devices have raised the caution from the public on the safety of the devices. This has also brought about a call to action on the part of distributors, retailers, and manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with applicable standards, ensuring the quality and safety of their transport devices.
Through our 360° suite of services, Intertek offers solutions for the devices themselves, their batteries, battery packs, software, chemicals, labelling, packaging and more.
For Self-Balancing Personal Transport Devices:
• UL 2272 for US/ Canada
• EN 17128 for Europe
• AS/NZS 60335.2.114 for Australia
• IEC 60335-2-114 for some other international countries
For Lithium-Ion Batteries:
• UL 1642/ UL 2271/ UL 2580 for US/ Canada
• EN/IEC 61233 for Europe and international countries
• UN 38.3 (United Nations Standard for Safe Transport)
According to US CSPC, there were 52 reported fire incidents caused by hoverboards during three months between 2015 and 2016. This has resulted in more than US$2 million worth of property damages.
The scope of UL2272 was then expanded to the testing of e-mobility devices, including e-scooters and e-skateboards in 2018. UL 2272 is a system approach to evaluate battery safety in personal e-mobility devices. The tests are in four major categories:
• Electrical Tests
• Mechanical Tests
• Environmental Tests
• Material/ Component Tests
Intertek is a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) accepted by all regulators, major retailers and distributors and can test to UL 2272 (Outline of Investigation for Electrical Systems for Self-Balancing Scooters). With Intertek as your quality partner, you can rest assured that your products are safe and of quality in the global market.
