An unsafe level of harmful chemicals is one of the most common reasons for product recalls. Recently, Italy recalled a plastic toy crocodile manufactured in China due to high levels of the solvent xylene in the product. The toy was recalled due to non-compliance with the requirements of the Toys Safety Directive and European standard EN71 part 9.

Xylene is primarily used as a solvent in the printing, rubber and leather industries and is also a common component of ink, rubber and adhesives. It may cause irritation if it comes into contact with the skin or if its vapor is inhaled in high concentrations.

According to the Toy Safety Directive, toys must be “designed and manufactured in such a way that there are no risks of adverse effects on human health due to exposure to the chemical substances or mixtures of which the toys are composed or which they contain when the toys are used as intended or in a foreseeable way.” At the same time, EN71 parts 9-11 addresses the risks presented by organic chemical compounds in toys by taking into account the potential exposure and toxicological effects of those substances considered to present the greatest risks to health.
